Position Duties: The Seattle Police Department is actively recruiting Latent Print Examiners to join our team of highly motivated professionals. The Latent Print Examiner will analyze and compare latent prints. Collect and preserve latent prints and other physical evidence in the laboratory, as well as under potentially adverse conditions at major crime scenes. Locate, develop, recover and preserve latent impressions on a wide variety of materials and surfaces using physical, chemical, electronic, and optical techniques. Administer infrared, ultraviolet, and other special forensic photographic procedures, including digital imaging devices. Evaluate and enter suitable latent prints into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) by photographing, determining the minutiae, identifying position, tracing, and inputting the impression. Determine identifications and non-identifications by comparison and verification of each latent print to AFIS candidate lists. Write detailed reports concerning results of analysis. Recover fingerprints, palm prints, and footprints from deceased and decomposed bodies, victims of crime, and potentially violent suspects. Train Identification Technicians in the proper collection, preservation, and documentation of latent print evidence. Provide training to law enforcement personnel concerning the proper collection and preservation of physical evidence. Testify in criminal legal proceedings as needed concerning methods of analysis and results. The expert Latent Print Examiner team is part of the Department's Forensic Support Services including the Identification Unit, Evidence Unit, Photo Lab, and Video Unit.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Police Laboratory Technician performs highly technical and complex latent print work and is responsible for the analysis, comparison and verification of latent prints collected at crime and accident scenes. This work involves the development, preservation and presentation of evidence in conjunction with investigative activities, development and maintenance of fingerprint and photograph files and records including: capturing, scanning, and archiving digital images of latent prints and crime scenes; using Photoshop software for image calibration and enhancement; following established procedures to maintain chain of custody for physical evidence; preparing and testifying in court proceedings as an expert in latent print analysis; preparing charts and other aids for court presentations; initiating, preparing, reviewing or evaluating records and reports to inform Detectives and Officers of the status of an examination; preparing thorough and accurate reports; entering, maintaining, retrieving and evaluating statistical information; working with powders and chemicals to develop latent prints; processing blood and other bodily fluids from crime scenes and physical evidence; obtaining inked finger and palm prints from persons and comparing them to latent or inked prints to establish identity; and providing latent print processing training to Officers, Community Service Officers and the Citizens Police Academy. Job Duties: To plan, direct, organize, and coordinate the operations and activities of the Crime Laboratory and Evidence Control unit; and to perform other related work. Reporting directly to the Administrative Services Captain, the Crime Laboratory Manager manages nine full-time employees and oversees three units: Forensics (crime scene investigation, evidence processing and fingerprint examination), Evidence Control and Crime Laboratory Business Office.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in physical or natural science, forensic science, criminal justice administration or a related field and five years of experience working in a law enforcement crime laboratory performing crime scene investigation, fingerprint identification and evidence control, including two years of supervisory experience. Experience in an ASCLD/LAB laboratory is desirable. A Master's degree in a related field is highly desirable.

Stateside Tenprint/Biometrics Examiner

Several job openings are available on the Department of Defense Biometric Examination Services Team (BES Team), which supports the United States military in its global fight against terrorism by processing digital images for identification purposes.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: manually compare latent prints, on screen, with candidate prints retrieved from ABIS in order to establish or eliminate positive identification, in addition to verification of fingerprints to validate the correct sequence. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, be customer- and detail-oriented, and possess good decision-making abilities. Experience with digital imaging is preferred. In addition to these duties, examiners will process face and iris images following training and certification as a Facial and Iris Recognition Expert by the DoD. Tenprint examiners will also be offered an opportunity to undergo an extensive two year training program to become Latent Print Examiners (LPEs) and obtain certification as an LPE through the International Association for Identification.

Overseas Latent Print Examiners

A private company seeks several Latent Print Examiners for employment as civilian contractors supporting US military activity on-base in Iraq. CLPEs trained to competency in a state or federal ASCLD/LAB accredited laboratory, with recent Latent Print Examiner employment experience are preferred. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

* Supervising and evaluating/examining evidence for the presence of identifiable impressions;
* Supervising and assisting Crime Scene Technicians and Evidence Custodians regarding limited evidence processing, preservation and stabilization procedures (normally only superglue fuming) and packaging;
* Supervising Evidence Custodian preparation of Laboratory Examination requests;
* Conducting training for US and Iraqi personnel regarding latent print evidence procedures; and
* Performing related duties benefiting the evidence collection and preservation for the mission.
Candidates must:
* Meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information and will be subject to a government security investigation.
* Be able to successfully pass proficiency testing prior to and periodically during employment with the company.
* Already have, or, within one year of eligibility, successfully obtain certification from IAI as an LPE.

Duty rotation is a minimum four month tour in Iraq, 30-60 days rest and recreation back in the US, another four months in Iraq, etc. This is a good opportunity for a retiree seeking to supplement his or her income.
